The Role
Overall purpose:
To join 42T’s business development team in the Industrial sector, with the remit to grow our industrial product development business. The Director of Industrial Sensors and Instrumentation will drive business development activities leveraging the company’s established experience in the development of industrial sensors, instrumentation, and equipment. Connectivity, fluid mechanics, thermal control, electronics and optics are strong capabilities that we seek to build on. Embedded AI/Edge AI will be an ongoing and growing theme in this area. There will be strong links to our manufacturing innovation service for our clients.
What success looks like:
Establishing 42T as a recognised development partner within the industrial sensors, instrumentation and metrology market, building and maintaining a strong, qualified pipeline of strategically relevant opportunities, and developing senior relationships with new and existing clients to convert strategic accounts into long-term customers. Originating and winning significant, high-value consultancy projects and programmes that are technically ambitious and commercially attractive, while growing the portfolio of product development and manufacturing innovation work in the sector. Using market insight and client engagement to shape future propositions aligned with 42T's technical capabilities and emerging industry needs, and providing accurate forecasts and clear visibility of sector performance, opportunities and risks.
Main duties / key responsibilities:
To grow 42T’s business in the industrial sensors, instrumentation and metrology sector.
• Develop and execute a strategy to grow the sector by selling high value, ambitious consultancy projects.
• Understand market needs and trends combined with pro-active networking to identify prospective clients and to develop those relationships into new accounts.
• High-value proposition development to align with client needs and industry trends.
• Manage existing client accounts to identify opportunities to grow the project portfolio.
• Based on deep sector knowledge, be a thought leader on the current industry trends and championing production of marketing collateral aligned with 42 Technology’s capabilities and experience.
• Lead the commercial negotiation of projects, involving relevant legal and executive colleagues as appropriate.
• Liaise with relevant project managers to oversee project delivery, ensuring that projects are delivered in accordance with – or exceeding – client expectations as well as adhering to 42 Technology’s established business management processes and culture.
Working relationships:
You will report to 42 Technology’s Chief Commercial Officer.
Regular reporting on progress and forecasts against strategy and plan to the wider business development team.
Working with other members of the business development team to establish consistent and best practice within the team.
Working with key members of the project delivery team on your projects and accounts.
Alignment on account ownership and responsibilities with other business developers who may be involved in developing business with similar clients.
Coaching other team members seeking to play a role in business development.
Person Requirements
Education / Qualifications:
Essential:
• Educated to degree level in a relevant technical subject such as physics, engineering or electronics. Supported by further relevant commercial qualifications.
Desirable:
Higher degree, such as PhD or MBA.
Knowledge and Skills:
Essential:
• Extensive knowledge and expertise within the industrial sensing, instrumentation and metrology sector.
• Have an extensive, relevant, pre-existing network within the sector, including C-suite and senior management in R&D, Manufacturing and/or Quality. Network must be in the UK, Western Europe and/or US geographies.
• Have good experience of business development and/or sales within the sector.
• Understanding and familiarity of current and emergent trends within the sector.
• The right to work in the UK.
• Valid passport and willingness to travel regularly internationally.
Desirable:
• Business development experience in consulting or a related field.
• Consulting experience involving product development and/or manufacturing innovation.
• Embedded AI or Edge AI technical knowledge and a relevant network.
• Experience managing complex product development/R&D projects.
• First-hand experience of corporate innovation processes.
• Full UK Driving Licence.

• Personable and empathic approach to building and developing relationships.
